What is burden bearing? It is a form of intercession in which we bear another’s hurt (or portion of it) just as Jesus bore ours. To bear one another’s burdens is to identify with another person, by means of empathy, and in in response to the call of the Holy Spirit.
It is a gift actually and designed to be a blessing from God. It helps us to identify with others, and builds unity in the body of Christ. It allows us to be co-laborers with Christ, drawing us into closer relationship with Him. It makes us humble, and builds our trust in God.
It is a gift but to many burden bearing can seem like a curse. It will become a curse when we do it without the participation and direction of the Holy Spirit, it can be a heavy burden. When we don’t understand the gift, it can be confusing and painful.
I am a burden bearer but I am a wounded burden bearer, it’s a gift from God but sometimes it becomes a heavy burden for me. Why? because sometimes when i see or sense the trouble or sufferings of others and God doesn’t seem to be do doing anything about them, sometimes I take on the responsibility. I sometimes pray to the Lord to transfer the pain or suffering to me, instead of letting that person suffer. I try to be the “savior” instead of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Bearing the burden of others is not saying “Lord, I want to bear the burden of that person” you are substituting the role of Christ but instead you side with him, you empathize or participate with him.
” Lord, the gift may seem so heavy for me to carry. I tried to take more than You intended to. I forgot that your yoke is to be easy and Your burden is light. Lord bring to death the gift of burden bearing on the cross, Let it be yours so it will not possess and control me. I want you to own both me and my gift that you may use me for Your glory alone. In Jesus name. Amen”
