Choosing Life

Life is Beautiful even When It Hurts

Embracing Life’s Journey: Reflections on Aging, Challenges, and Finding Fulfillment

I recently celebrated another birthday, which reminded me that I have one less year to live on this earth. However, despite this realization, my heart still feels as young and alive as it did in my twenties. I still believe in the idea of love at first sight and that true love can last forever. I still dress like young people, maybe teenagers.

At the same time, it pains me to see the number of homeless people in our society. It’s hard to ignore their struggles and the fact that so many people are struggling to put a roof over their heads. I also feel frustrated and angry about the way politics works, with all its corruption and self-interest. It’s disheartening to see how much power and money influence decision-making, and how little regard is given to the needs and well-being of ordinary citizens.

Despite these challenges, growing old has its blessings. I’ve learned to stop caring about what people think about me and to focus on living my life according to my values and beliefs. I don’t feel the need to compete with others or climb the ladder of success just for the sake of it. I’ve learned to set my own pace and to follow my path, even if it means traveling alone. I’ve come to appreciate the joy of the journey, rather than just the destination.

Being young can be quite challenging as you often feel like you’re not making progress and lagging behind others. This is one of the biggest downsides of the social media era where everyone seems to flaunt their accomplishments. It can make you feel like you’re not doing enough in your personal or professional life. You may come across social media posts from old friends, classmates, or former colleagues who seem to be living their best lives. They could be traveling to the places you have always dreamt of, or enjoying their time with their family. You may also see posts from former colleagues who have been promoted to the position you wanted when you worked with them. Meanwhile, you might be stuck at home, watching Netflix all day, and feeling like you’re struggling to move up the career ladder.

One important thing to consider is asking yourself an honest question. If you close your eyes remove all the influences of social media and other people’s lives, and focus solely on your situation, would you still feel content? Would you be happy with what you’re currently doing? Comparing yourself to others can often lead to unhappiness and feelings of inadequacy, as you may be measuring your life against someone else’s “ideal life”. It’s important to focus on what truly makes you happy and fulfilled, rather than comparing yourself to others.

In today’s world, where social media is filled with posts of people showcasing their achievements and milestones, it’s natural to compare your own life with what you see online. However, it’s important to remember that everyone’s journey is different and what you see on social media is just a highlight reel. Instead of measuring your progress against an unrealistic standard, ask yourself if you’re happy and satisfied with your current life and the things you’re doing. If the answer is yes, then you’re doing great and you’re not behind in life. It’s crucial to focus on your own goals and aspirations instead of comparing yourself to others. Keep working towards what makes you happy and fulfilled.

Instead of focusing on the accomplishments of others, take a personal inventory of your own life. While you may not be the boss of bosses, consider these things: the impact you have on others, Do you maintain healthy relationships with others? Are you striving to live a healthy lifestyle? Are you actively growing and learning new things? Are you content with simply watching your favorite show on Netflix alone, or do you seek out experiences that bring you joy and excitement? Then maybe you are not, after all, behind in life. You are just on another road enjoying your life differently from others.

So if you feel inadequate and behind in life…..

Stop comparing your life to others

Stop trying harder with the thought of redeeming your time.

Start appreciating your accomplishments no matter how small it is.

Start surrounding yourself with people who appreciate you and not pressure you to do more

Start seeking experiences that will bring you joy, and excitement.

Remember we all have our journey, we all have our path to follow, you are unique, you don’t need to be like them to have a life to the fullest.
